The Crab Revolution.
Just a cute little animation I found through my dad (imagine the odds).
Besides youtube it's available on http://pawky.com/featured/the_crab_revolution in slightly higher quality.

Sources of inspiration
This is one of the points where I feel real uncomfortable for about half an hour, produce the list of required length, and then immediately try to forget I ever wrote that list.
Then again, the assignment said: 3 examples of work that inspires you, without any specifics, so that is exactly what this'll be.
Source #1 (in no particular order)
Philippe Druillet, "Salammbo", video game
The game is as obscure as it gets (which it partially deserves), but featured a visual style that I personally find hard to forget.
Screenshots:

David Lynch and Co, Frank Herbert's "Dune", film
One of the best books in history of (place whatever you see fit here). The movie - not so great, but whoever worked the art side of it knew their trade.
Screens:

Robin Nishi & Studio 4°C, "Mindgame", animated feature-length film
The people who made "Cat soup" also created this mind-blowing film with oversimplified and yet somehow complex visuals.
Screens:

Man, getting screens for works like these is harder than finding a black cat in a dark room...
